Haemophilus parasuis is an early colonizer of the upper respiratory tract of pigs1. Virulent
strains of H. parasuis can invade the host and cause systemic lesions characterized by
fibrinous polyserositis, arthritis, and meningitis.1 H. parasuis primarily affects young pigs
4-8 weeks of age but sporadic disease can be observed in adult pigs.1 Disease caused by
H. parasuis has a sudden onset, short course and high morbidity and mortality rates.1
Clinical Signs1
Clinical signs are seen primarily in pigs 4-8 weeks old and include:
• High fever (106.7ºF) • Swollen joints
• Lack of appetite • Reluctance to rise
• Severe coughing • Paddling
• Abdominal breathing • Trembling
PARASAIL H. parasuis vaccine was administered to 1,068 pigs at approximately 3 weeks
of age. Just 0.66% displayed adverse systemic reactions; all of which recovered within a
few minutes. Injection site swelling was observed in 6.6% of pigs 7 days post vaccination.
Only one pig (0.095%) displayed injection site swelling 21 days post vaccination.
PARASAIL safety has been documented with field safety studies as well as USDArequired
studies to determine if post-vaccination shedding or spread to non-vaccinates
occurs. Neither occurred. Also, reversion to virulence was shown not to occur with a
USDA-required back-passage study.
PARASAIL Performance4
In field trials, PARASAIL reduced lesions associated with H. parasuisby 50%. In the same trial, PARASAIL reduced arthritis by 86%.
PARASAIL Features5
