Newport Labs Parasail is a reconstituted vaccine product containing an avirulent live culture of Haemophilus parasuis. It is for the vaccination of healthy swine 3 weeks of age and older, as an aid in the prevention of Glässer’s disease in swine caused by Haemophilus parasuis. Inject a single dose 1.0 mL intramuscularly (I.M.). 21-day withdrawal period.
Availability: mfg backorder
Haemophilus parasuis is an early colonizer of the upper respiratory tract of pigs1. Virulent
strains of H. parasuis can invade the host and cause systemic lesions characterized by
fibrinous polyserositis, arthritis, and meningitis.1 H. parasuis primarily affects young pigs
4-8 weeks of age but sporadic disease can be observed in adult pigs.1 Disease caused by
H. parasuis has a sudden onset, short course and high morbidity and mortality rates.1
Clinical signs are seen primarily in pigs 4-8 weeks old and include:
• High fever (106.7ºF) • Swollen joints
• Lack of appetite • Reluctance to rise
• Severe coughing • Paddling
• Abdominal breathing • Trembling
PARASAIL H. parasuis vaccine was administered to 1,068 pigs at approximately 3 weeks
of age. Just 0.66% displayed adverse systemic reactions; all of which recovered within a
few minutes. Injection site swelling was observed in 6.6% of pigs 7 days post vaccination.
Only one pig (0.095%) displayed injection site swelling 21 days post vaccination.
PARASAIL safety has been documented with field safety studies as well as USDArequired
studies to determine if post-vaccination shedding or spread to non-vaccinates
occurs. Neither occurred. Also, reversion to virulence was shown not to occur with a
USDA-required back-passage study.
In field trials, PARASAIL reduced lesions associated with H. parasuisby 50%. In the same trial, PARASAIL reduced arthritis by 86%.
• Avirulent live H. parasuis protection
• Single dose - reduces time, handling and animal stress
• Low 1mL dose volume - Low tissue disruption & excellent syringeability
• 21-day withdrawal period
Aseptically rehydrate freeze-dried vial of PARASAIL with part of the accompanying bottle of diluent
(see insert for complete directions). Mix reconstituted vial well and transfer rehydrated vaccine into
diluent bottle. Shake diluent bottle well. Peel label from freeze-dried vial and place on diluent bottle
containing all vaccine.
Discontinue antibiotic therapy 72 hours before vaccination, do not resume until 24 hours post
vaccination. Store refrigerated at 35º - 45º F (2º - 7ºC). Do not freeze. Use immediately after
reconstitution; do not save partial contents. Burn the container and all unused contents. Do not
vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter. Transient reaction may occur at injection site. If anaphylaxis
occurs, use epinephrine or equivalent. Contains Streptomycin and Amphotericin B as preservatives.
